There we stood, my family of five, huddling on the top deck as our vessel chugged through shark-infested waters in fog-smothered San Francisco Bay. (You know that famous quip, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco?” It hits the nail on the head.) “Got to take it all in, kids,” I said. “You know, get the full meal deal. Don’t even think about going inside.” And then, dead ahead, just seconds before the inevitable mutiny, rising out of the mist in all its ghastly greatness was “The Rock.” Alcatraz.
